How to Fix a Dishwasher

A dishwasher is an essential part of the kitchen in any household. It allows you to easily clean up after a meal and provides you with clean dishes and utensils for your meal's next course. It also saves you time to enjoy with family and friends.

If your dishwasher is clogged, cleaning poorly or making a loud grinding noise when it runs, something in the common dishwasher could solve your dilemma. Dishwasher repair is possible even if you’re as handy as a bucket.

This guide will show you how to deal with one of the most common dishwasher problems.

Tools and Equipment

The dishwasher repairs talked about in this article might require one or more of these tools or pieces of equipment:

Slotted and Phillips head screwdriver

Putty knife

Combination wrench set

Work gloves

Needle-nose pliers

Some fixes may also require a multimeter, an electronic measuring device to measure voltage, current and resistance. You should check to make sure what tools and devices are necessary for a given repair are required prior to starting.

Dishwasher Not Cleaning

If your dishwasher is not getting anything clean, the first thing you should do is toss in two cups of vinegar or a few packets of unsweetened lemonade, then run it on a full cycle on the hottest water setting. Have a look in these areas for any lingering food particles, grease and debris:

The strain screen

Sprayer arms

Door gaskets

Spray Arms

When the spray arms aren’t working, your dishwasher may not be cleaning as well as it should. Here are some potential ways to fix the problem:

See if there is any hard water build up on the spray arms. If you suspect they are, try to clean the spray arms to get rid of the buildup.

Examine to make sure the spray arm can move without resistance and that there is no item in the load blocking it.

Check under the hood to see if the spray arm bearing ring could be loose or worn out causing a poor wash result.

Examine spray arm for cracks or holes obstructed by food or debris such as cellophane. If you find a clogged hole, the filter system may be faulty.

Ensure the mounting bracket isn’t loose, blocked or cracked.

Upper Discharge Housing Gasket Notes Gasket provided for upper discharge housing Provides a tight seal to secure connection between upper discharge housing and lower discharge housing.

Perhaps its another cause of the problem is the upper discharge housing gasket. It is on the discharge cover, above the circulating impeller. If it’s held loose, it might be hobbling your dishwasher’s cleaning ability. Just screw it in tighter and it will work.

When you replace this gasket, make sure there is no debris that blocks the gasket from seating correctly.

Wrong or Old Detergent

One easy fix you might be overlooking is that you’re not using a good enough detergent or that the detergent in your cabinet has been there a little too long.

Dishwasher Not Drying

The possible cause of your dishwasher not drying may be connected to an issue with one of these parts:

Heating Element

As you might be able to surmise, that heating element is what dries the dishes. How to Troubleshoot If Your Dishwasher is Not Heating Up Here is a guide on how to troubleshoot your dishwasher when it is not heating properly.

Ensure that the dishwasher is off.

Check for continuity with a multimeter. The terminals of the heating element under the tub–remove the lower panel for reaching.

Inspect all wires and connections. If any appear old or worn, they might need replacing.

High-Limit Thermostat

The high-limit thermostat is a safety temperature device that keeps the dishwasher from overheating. If this one is faulty the heat will be turned off before a load is able to dry.

Find this thermostat near the bottom of the dishwasher tub, under the lower access panel. You can then test for continuity with a multimeter.

Rinse Aid Dispenser

Rinse aid like the one from Finish is supposed to help dishes (and, for that matter, any items) repel water, so if it’s out of whack, it may be stopping your dishwasher from drying everything well. To inspect:

Make sure rinse aid chamber is not empty.

Check to ensure the cap is in place and adjusted.

Dishwasher Rack Repair

If your racks don’t roll out, you can:

Fix the alignment of the rack

Inspect the rollers or wheels for wear and tear

You might have to throw them out if the damage is extreme.

Dishwasher is Noisy

Your dishwasher might just be loud because there’s a broken or defective part. Inspect the following components to see if they are producing any unwanted noise.

Pump

The pump is a vital component of any dishwasher. A broken pump may require replacement or you can also replace the wash arm seal or bearing ring.

A pump can fail mechanically or electronically. Check with a multimeter to see if it's a elecrical fault. A continuity failure indicates a faulty pump if you are checking for continuity. If that’s positive, you could have a mechanical problem, such as:

Here are the most common causes of an impeller malfunction. An impeller with a break in it or a blockage

A seized motor bearings

With a motor fault, the pump motor needs to be replaced. But it is something that reasonable hoomans can clear to make the impeller spin.

Wash Arm Bearing Ring and Spray Arm Seal Open DishDrawer™ and remove filter plate, then lift out washarm bearing ring by rotating rim ¼ turn clockwise.

These are plastic pieces that support the wash arm or spray arm. If they’re loose or worn down, they can be quite noisy.

Spray Arms

Check if the spray arms have adequate space to spin freely without striking an obstruction. One of a few possibilities: Wobbly spray arms Wobbly spray arms could just mean the centre hub of the spray arm part is worn away. In this instance, you may have to replace it.

My Dishwasher is Noisy or Grinding

A dishwasher that’s making a grinding sound is one that will also have a problem draining. Munching on something hard enough can end up getting it stuck in the pump or else the gears.

Start With a Clean Dishwasher The first step is to open your dishwasher and empty and clean the appliance. At this point you may discover the object causing the grinding sound. It can be the size of a kernel, or of a piece of flatware.

Another possible cause of a grinding noise is if you have a dishwasher that is loaded wrong, dishwasher parts are hitting each other and increasing the noise. Attempt to put items in their proper place on the rack so that they will be held in place when washed.
